It would be a shame for the focus to be on a typo. Or to confuse the readers of subtitles between who is speaking. Imagine a name typo, or special word in Japanese is incorrectly typed (as I research key terms and check consistency of these) or translated.

I don’t need to tell you that small errors make a big audience impact. Yet it’s part of my job to mention that here.

I love writing

I started proofreading and editing theses when I finished my first postdoc. The reason? I have always loved writing. Hearing about friends’ awful experiences with unqualified proof-readers (not all are unqualified) I knew I could help. Imagine a master’s student trying to proofread a thesis of 90,000 words when they are more used to shorter documents. You can see why issues arise. Plus there is a big leap from a MA to a PhD.

A big thank you for your support during these challenging times.

My day involves sitting at my desk every morning to work after enjoying a leisurely breakfast with my husband. I take a break for a homecooked lunch (a decent one hour and a half break) and work again until those deadlines are hit — perhaps with some marketing work thrown in to promote my business so people can find me, and relaxing in the evening. Then hit repeat.

Advantages & disadvantages

The advantages are: flexibility, spending time with my husband, being my own boss. Also, helping others, working in a comfortable environment away from office gossip and stressful working conditions. As well as being able to creative write some mornings when waiting on client work coming in. The disadvantages, are income uncertainty, holiday uncertainty, and the lack of support from the Universal Credit (UC) system. A system which is not designed to support freelance workers whose income fluctuates. You are removed from the system after two “good” months, and have to attend meetings and justify searching for work which negatively impacts searching for work (two hours on buses for a fifteen minute meeting? What a waste of time! Thus, I’ve found that since restrictions for UC have been lifted to attend meetings and justify work history, this time it has been easier to complete paperwork and let me get on with working and building my business instead of ticking boxes.

Why I left fulltime employment

I left fulltime employment because I disliked the work environment. Mainly, the sense of being a faceless number who didn’t deserve promotion and fair pay despite overworking whenever required. So, I said, no more. No more being taken advantage of. I returned to university to get a PhD and launched my own business in 2017. Still, that been said everyone needs to find their own niche and work hard not to under price themselves and take work from other people.

My business is always evolving. Thus, I often take time off from blog writing to focus on reaching potential clients in other ways. Sadly this means I am not continuing my Emma vs. Grammerly series. Though I still check in now and then to gawp at reviews people leave for the software on Trustpilot, and invite you to do the same.

Here are some tips to ensure you pick the right proofreader for your project. I’m going to start with the most contentious subject pricing.

Pricing

If the price appears too good to be true: it is. Don’t trust it. Newcomers or those without qualifications tend to underbid everyone so they can gain publishing credits. Sure, it’s a low price but at what cost? I’d also be wary of thesis and journal article websites that promise a second reading of your text… why isn’t the job not done correctly the first time?

So beware of too-low pricing and too-fast a turnaround. A thesis of 80,000 in 24 hours. I don’t think so. This practice sounds dishonest. Got a book nearby? Open it, imaging reading every sentence once for clarity, another for grammar and spelling errors, including every word and punctuation mark. Thus a book can easily take a month to proofread. It is not realistic to expect 80,000 words to be proofread within a week, or two so if a proofreader offers such a bargain at a low price, find another one. Clearly spell- and grammar-checking software is being used instead of a real person reading through your text a line at a time.

Reviews

I am fortunate that I have worked with many lovely people who appreciate that reviews make the difference between someone hiring me or not. What my client’s say speaks, forgive the cliché, volumes. If they are providing a quality service the reviews will tell you. If you can’t find any reviews, or lots of anonymous ones, be careful.

A Writing sample

Quite often when asked for a quote, unless I am very pressed I try to send a few sentences as a writing sample so a potential client knows what to expect with me. If unsure who to pick send a sample to your potential top pick. This should give an indication of what level of trust you can place in them. However please do not do this to many of us to compare, because this is an investment of our time for you.

Get it in writing

Usually I provide a quotation with what is included to keep myself and the client on track about what to expect. We arrange dates and deadlines. Everything in writing. Some proofreaders also offer a service contract or to sign a nondisclosure agreement.

This agreement should outline the scope of services, as well as costs and deadline. That is a fair indication that you are dealing with a trustworthy proofreader.

Avoid websites offering anonymous edits

On many online proofreading services you submit an “order” and upload your document. Then a proofreader is assigned to you.

Working with me, you can see exactly who I am! And work directly with me. I do not pay others to do proofreading, I only take on work that I can do myself. Not always the case for a large company, so how can you be sure about what qualifications their proofreaders have?

Working towards a world full of colourful socks

I found these little stories in my creative writing archive this month, and thought I would share them with you. I was working at the Edinburgh College of Art at the time… Imagine you’re in Edinburgh around 2002, and you buy a newspaper hot off the printing press (a machine that used to print ink words on paper before everyone went digital).

Queen missing!

Queen discovered missing last night by her bit-on-the-side. Fortunately found ten minutes later playing cards with her husband Albert. The Queen was quoted as saying: “One is not amused” as a dozen royal guards descended on their game of cards and upset the table ruining their game of snap. A reliable source says the table is still depressed twenty-four hours after the incident and under close supervision.

Goat for sale

Grey goat, all teeth present, polished hooves. Will sell for £2 and a pack of stamps. Answers to the name of Figaro.

Elephant escapes: Speedos found

Lovable Trunky, of Dundee, managed to squeeze herself out of an air vent yesterday and went on the run. Luckily the crash of a peanut lorry with a butter truck on the M90 slowed her progress. In a bizarre turn of events a man watching the incident on television noticed his blue Speedos dangling from her tail. He had earlier reported them missing at the Olympic swimming pool. Rob Adams said, moments after phoning Channel 4 News, “I’m glad to have them back like, I cannae swim without them.” Mr Adams and his Speedos were happily reunited by recorded delivery this morning.

Phantom giant rat

No further news at this time. We have been unable to reliably verify the existance of the phantom rat.

Review: Ulrich Bröckling, The Entrepreneurial Self: Fabricating a New Type of Subject. 

Today, I recieved a box of hardback copies of Young People, Learning and Storytelling (published with Palgrave Macmillan)

Strange to read my short article after a year, even stranger seeing the book that took me four years to research, and one year to write (with book proposal writing inbetween).

When I reread the article I saw some room for improvement. I think this is more apparent to me now because I have read a lot of things about improving academic writing and edited the work of others. The article was gladly accepted, still I can see some room for improvement. For example, tip of the day: avoid the word ‘it’ and use something more precise.

When I looked at my research book I’m proud because I wrote the book I wanted to. The arrival of the box below tells me that it’s time to face a new writing challenge… bring it on!

Update: since writing this text I have started my own proofreading business as a way to support myself whilst writing.
