Broomhill House. A modern gothic mystery set in rural Scotland
Coming soon: a story of memory, secrets, and the shadows that linger in an abandoned estate.
The Blurb
In 1982, Ivy McNeil returns to Broomhill House with a skeleton key and a fragmented memory. The estate has stood silent for decades, but something inside still remembers her — and refuses to let her go. As Ivy searches for the truth buried within its rooms, she uncovers a past shaped by obsession, betrayal, and a presence that has been waiting for her return.
The real story behind Broomhill House and the Black Lady
Broomhill House in Larkhall is a real place — a once‑grand estate long associated with strange happenings and whispered folklore. Locals speak of the Black Lady, a shadowy figure said to wander the grounds and stairways, appearing in dark clothing and vanishing just as quickly.
Sita Phurdeen met Henry McNeil when he was in the army, in Africa. Of Indian descent Helen Moir records that she had found herself in Africa and that she may have been a camp servant at the time. Originally born from high caste, something unknown occurred in her past and led her there. McNeil offered her a better life in Scotland. However, in 1904 she was last seen by a maid at 10 p.m. and never seen again. Even her belongings were gone by morning. Only the last train from the station was at 9 p.m.
No more official records explain who she was, or why her presence lingers, but the legend has become part of the area’s identity: a story passed quietly between generations.
My novel is a fictional re‑imagining of this mystery. Broomhill House takes the atmosphere, the unanswered questions, and the haunting figure of the Black Lady, and weaves them into a modern gothic tale of memory, loss, and the secrets old houses keep.
Broomhill House blends gothic atmosphere with psychological mystery, weaving together rural Scottish folklore, family secrets, and the haunting pull of a place that refuses to be forgotten. If you enjoy eerie houses, unreliable memories, and slow‑burn tension, this novel will draw you in from the first page.
