Temptation & Mozzarella

A fantasy novel set in Scotland for fans of Robert Rankin and Terry Pratchett and books with aliens in them.

Blurb

The biggest mistake of Smith’s life was agreeing that his parents could stay with him until they found the money to rebuild the family home. Two years later, the family home was still the plot of burnt brick beside the pizza place. His parents didn’t seem to be finding anywhere else in a hurry. In fact Father was building a palestra in the garage, and Mother kept redecorating the living room without asking for permission. Welcome to Smith’s life… it is about to get bats in the belfry weird.

Where the story came from

This was my first complete book. I wrote it while doing a master’s at St Andrews in creative writing. John Burnside found it bonkers, so I kept on going with the idea. The very first scene came to me on a train. I looked out the window and imagined a dark night, a welcoming pub, and a stranger entering and seeing people playing snooker … only the balls were invisible. Ten years later I published it and moved on.

Reader recommendations

“I am not embarrassed to say that I laughed outloud on the bus. Great value for money, the author obviously took a lot of time and effort writing and editing this book. I think if I say too much it will give away the plot. Consider reading it if you like Robert Rankin’s wacky sense of humour, Terry Pratchett’s randomness and prefer character-based stories over plot driven ones. Don’t read if you don’t like sci-fi or fantasy”
