Here are my 5 Favourite Historical Fiction Books for 2024.

Looking for an old read? Dreaming of historical fiction in your dreams?

In 2024, the world of historical fiction continues to captivate readers with its rich narratives and vivid portrayals of the past. This year, we are thrilled to highlight a selection of historical fiction books predominantly authored by talented women. These novels not only transport us to different eras but also offer unique perspectives and compelling stories that resonate with readers. Here is my list of favourite historical fiction books.

The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods

The novel weaves a story in Ireland around a vanishing bookshop. The magic is real! It follows XX who has run away from her life into a new one, who meets a bumbling academic type, and they set about solving a mystery together. I don’t want to tell you any spoilers! A book for those who love libraries.

23 Burlington Square Jenni Keer

5-Favourite-Historical-Fiction-Books-for-2024

Wonderful humour and characterisation from the get-go. In 1920s Britain, the landlady has to make a choice about who to let a spare room to. There are three candidates: the selfish niece, the banker, or the runaway wife. The reader gets to journey through what would happen in each circumstance. I couldn’t put it down!

At the Stroke of Midnight Jenni Keer

Okay, I couldn’t resist adding another. Again, set in the 1920s, a daughter accompanies her overbearing father to a mansion. They’ve been invited … but by who and why? It’s also what I call historical fiction with a pinch of magic. As the daughter relives the same day over and over. Getting Déjà Vu? Far from Ground Hog Day, this is a subtle look at self-identity and whether or not we should meet others ‘expectations. She tries playing nice, and it just doesn’t work in 1920s Britain.

The Sea House Louise Douglas

A lady dies and leaves a bequest to a person from her past that seems untraceable. Mila and Carter are hired to track the person down. Revealing the entangled past of numerous people in their lives. Some great characterisation and description of the scenery.

Unsinkable by Jenni L. Walsh

Jenni L. Walsh’s “Unsinkable” takes readers aboard the infamous Titanic, following the lives of two brave female protagonists. This dual timeline novel spans both World War I and World War II, offering a poignant and thrilling narrative that highlights the resilience of its characters.

These historical fiction books, authored predominantly by women, offer a diverse and captivating array of stories that transport readers to various times and places. From the battlefields of Vietnam to the opulent courts of ancient China, these novels provide rich narratives that celebrate the resilience, strength, and complexity of their characters.
